The first Grand Slam of the tennis season, the Australian Open, gets underway from Melbourne on Monday and the men’s tournament looks all set to be a cracker with some of the sport’s biggest names all in action.
A win can really set the tone for the rest of the year and gives a player the confidence to go on and have a great deal of success in the remaining three Grand Slams.
There is no surprise that the favourite with the bookmakers for this one is Novak Djokovic as the Serbian is available at 5/4 with SkyBet to win here.
Djokovic was the winner in Melbourne last year and ended 2012 on a high with a victory in the ATP World Tour Finals, so his confidence will be sky high. Whenever he steps onto court, you know he is going to give 100 per cent and is always a front-runner for any big tennis tournament.
A bet on Andy Murray winning in Australia will then give you odds of 11/4 over at Ladbrokes. The Scotsman claimed his first Grand Slam victory in the US Open back in September and now that one has come, he will be expecting to add a few more this year.
Murray has shown he can compete with the best players in the world and with Rafael Nadal missing this tournament with injury, he knows he has an even better chance of lifting the trophy.
He made the final in 2010 and 2011, so will hope that he can go one better this time out.
Then you have Roger Federer, who is a four-time winner of this Australian Open, available at 5/1 with Boylesports. The Swiss can still challenge for the big titles in the sport, despite being in his 30’s, so betting on a win for him could be popular with such good odds.
He makes up the list of front-runners and if he does win here, then Federer would become the only player to win the competition five times.
The bookies don’t seem to be looking past one of these three lifting the title as Sportingbet have Juan Martin Del Potro as the next most likely to win here, but he is out at 20/1.
Then, David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga can be backed at 33/1 with Stan James.
For bets on an outsider though, take a look at the top Frenchman market, where we fancy Richard Gasquet to be the French player to go the further in this Australian Open and it had odds of 4/1 with BetVictor.
